The Oromo people need Protection, urgently!

The Oromo people need Protection, urgently. As the largest ethnic group the Oromo nation have suffered variations of atrocity crimes perpetrated by successive regimes. Because of their numerical strength and their huge, strategically located, and resource-rich homeland, the Oromo have been seen by the architects of the hegemony as a vast treasure trove of wealth to loot and a strategic anchor for further expansion and predation. Naturally, the Oromo have mounted an epic struggle to resist dictatorship . Times, regimes, circumstances, and fortunes have changed, but the struggle has continued.

Under Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party (PP), the plight of the Oromo has worsened. Initially Abiy’s partially Oromo heritage and his meteoric rise to fame as a man of peace and Nobel Peace Laureate caused many to see a glimmer of hope. But that was not only premature; it was entirely misplaced. PP turned out to be ideal vessels for a new and more lethal variant of fascism.
Currently Oromos collectively face massive, vicious & well-coordinated assault that has the hallmarks of a rare and multi-faceted form of Genocide, ethnically, nationally, and culturally. The all out campaign against Oromo started long before the outbreak of the war in Northern Ethiopia . The Rose Terror, as I described it elsewhere, has ravaged much of Oromia largely in the dark. Oromo politicians, political parties, civic and professional organizations, traditional elders, religious leaders, artists, students, traders, farmers, businessmen, journalists, media outlets, ordinary villagers have been marked for mass incarceration, torture, targeted assassination, or mass slaughter.

The mysterious death of a human rights lawyer during political turmoil in Ethiopia

The civil war in northern Ethiopia has gotten most of the media attention lately. But in the south, the government has launched a huge crackdown against its political adversaries. This is the story of a human rights lawyer, his mystery death and a government fighting for its survival. Here's NPR's Eyder Peralta.

EYDER PERALTA, BYLINE: As Soraya Kadir (ph) explains it, her husband has always been a pain for the Ethiopian government.

SORAYA KADIR: (Through interpreter) He's not afraid. He argues strongly with the government about injustice in the law. He has deep knowledge of the law, and he's a headache for them.

PERALTA: Abduljebar Hussien was one of Ethiopia's most prominent human rights lawyers. No matter who was in power, when an opposition leader was unjustly detained, he took the cases that no one wanted. So when the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed began rounding up politicians in his home region of Oromia, Abduljebar took on the most prominent cases. Soraya says it's also when the threats began - text messages to his phone. And one time, a lady showed up at their house.

KADIR: (Through interpreter) She warned me that he had to stop before death came to my house.

PERALTA: Abduljebar was angry that people he assumed were government agents threatened his family. Soraya heard him shout on the phone, kill me, but leave my family alone.

KADIR: (Through interpreter) He was telling me he is doing the right thing, and he was just working to defend justice and the constitution.

PERALTA: A month later, Soraya received a call from Abduljebar's cellphone. The person who called said her husband had collapsed. Soraya found his lifeless body dumped in a seedy side street. She rushed him to a hospital on a rickshaw.

KADIR: (Through interpreter) They stopped us outside. They didn't let him in, and they didn't even care.

PERALTA: Government officials told her and the Ethiopian public that he died of complications from diabetes. But this happened in August as the country was embroiled in the civil war and as the government rounded up thousands of political dissidents. Soraya knew their story did not add up.

KADIR: (Through interpreter) I never thought that death would come to my house, but it happened. And it is coming to every house. Every house is mourning. We are living in complete darkness.

PERALTA: Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took power in 2018, following years of protests by Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, the Oromos. They felt marginalized under the authoritarian regime led by ethnic Tigrayans. Abiy, himself an Oromo, promised to respect human rights. But within a couple of years, he went to war against the Tigrayans and broke ranks with many Oromos, some of whom have joined the civil war against Abiy's government.

AWOL ALLO: I think what happened in Oromia is really tragic.

PERALTA: That is Awol Allo, a professor of law at Keele University in the U.K. He says Abiy ended up siding with factions of Ethiopia's second largest ethnic group, the Amharas, who have pushed for a more imperial premiership. As elections drew closer, Awol says that Abiy made a political calculation that in order to win, he had to sideline his political adversaries in Oromia. With opponents in jail or boycotting because of the harassment, Abiy ran essentially unopposed.

ALLO: I think fundamentally what we see with Abiy - that this is someone that is determined to use whatever tactics, whatever strategy is necessary to consolidate his power.

PERALTA: It took a few days and a few changes in meeting places before I finally meet Hamza Mohammed, a prominent Oromo activist. He's a skinny guy with a shy smile. He sinks into his seat almost as if he doesn't want to be seen. He fears he'll be snatched up at any moment.

HAMZA MOHAMMED: I can't leave to - my home. Even I can't work. I can't move in freedom.

PERALTA: Back in June, the government held him for three months, accusing him of smuggling SIM cards into the house of Abiy's top political opponent. Hamza was thrown into the infamous Maikelawi prison. Abiy's government had closed the jail, vowing to end state terrorism. But it's back in use. Hamza says he was held naked in a refrigerated cell.

MOHAMMED: Cold (unintelligible). We don't have any clothes.

PERALTA: When we asked the prime minister's office about these claims. a spokeswoman said we were simply hearing from a few malcontents. But the government's own human rights commission has documented mass indiscriminate arrests of Oromos. It found even children had been detained. Hamza says he's documented a thousand young Oromos under arrest. The worst part, he says, is that he hasn't spoken to his mother for more than a year. He doesn't want the government to trace his calls or go after his mother the way they've gone after his father.

MOHAMMED: My father is jailed over three times in Hararghe. If I post anything on Facebook, they immediately arrested my family, immediately tortured my family.

PERALTA: Hamza hated Ethiopia's previous government. He led acts of civil disobedience against it. But Abiy's Ethiopia, he says, is worse.

MOHAMMED: We're going to war. He's torturing - he's detaining everyone. So this country can't be saved.

(SOUNDBITE OF RUSTLING ON VIDEO)

PERALTA: The video is shaky, but you can see the face of Abduljebar Hussien, a human rights lawyer. The man who took the video and shared it with NPR doesn't want to be named because he fears retribution. Gutema Khalil Buru (ph), a sheikh, was on call at the hospital that day to wash the bodies of the deceased.

GUTEMA KHALIL BURU: When we washed his body, there is government and security that follow us.

PERALTA: That's why the video is shaky - they are trying to film while security agents surround the room. You see Gutema's hands in the video. You see him gingerly removing surgical material.

(SOUNDBITE OF RUSTLING ON VIDEO)

PERALTA: You see that Abduljebar's face is swollen. And then as they turn his head, you see a huge gash in the back of his head.

KHALIL BURU: There are many injuries at the back of his head. (Unintelligible) It's like a knife or something.

PERALTA: Gutema says it took him an hour and a half to wash the blood off his body.

KHALIL BURU: All of us see this person is assassinated.

PERALTA: After he said those words - assassinated - he received so many threats, he had to flee Ethiopia. Abduljebar's wife, Soraya, says as soon as she publicly doubted he died of diabetes, threats came her way, too. Her family warned her, you'll be killed. But what hurts the most, she says, is that a man who gave his life to fight for justice is likely never to get it for himself.

ABBA GADAA UNION SAYS MISSING MEMBER OF KARRAYYU GADAA LEADERSHIP DEAD, DOZENS UNDER CUSTODY

ABBA GADAA UNION SAYS MISSING MEMBER OF KARRAYYU GADAA LEADERSHIP DEAD, DOZENS UNDER CUSTODY

The remaining people who were said to have gone missing after the contradicting reports surrounding the killing of 14 members of the Karrayyu Gadaa leadership were found in a detention center in Mojo, reports said. The secretary of Abba Gadaa union and Abba Gadaa of the Tulama, Gobana Hola confirmed that the remaining members of the Karrayyu Gadaa leadership are detained in Mojo and that one of them died. Residents of Fentale woreda spoke of tensions running high as the crackdown on the community escalated over the days following the killings and abduction of the Gadaa leadership.

An eye witness said that government forces abducted a total of 14 men including Abba Gadaas, Abba Boku, prominent community members and young men from the seat of the Gadaa leadership, Karra, where a prayer ceremony, Waaq Kadhaa was taking place on Wednesday December 1, 2021. The Oromia regional government however refuted the allegations and blamed the attacks on Shanee (a term used by government officials to refer to Oromo liberation army, OLA). The OLA on its part issued a statement attributing the attacks to government forces.

Gada Hawas Boru, the brother of the late Karrayyu Abaa Gadaa Kedir Hawas Boru, expressed dismay in the attack on the leaders. He detailed that the Karrayyu community including Abba Gadaas were harassed by government bodies

“WE REJECT THE GOVERNMENT’S REPORT SURROUNDING THE KILLINGS. WE DEMAND A CLEAR INVESTIGATION.”

ABBA GADAA GOBANA HOLA, ABBA GADAA OF THE TULAMA AND SECRETARY OF ABBA GADAA UNION

He also recalled a meeting the Abba Gadaa union held in Adama with officials from the Oromia regional government including the deputy president of Oromia regional state, Awelu Abdo and officials from Oromia tourism bureau where the union condemned the killing of Karrayyu Abba Gadaas. “There are contradicting reports coming out, preventing the union from identifying the perpetrators while different parties trading blames,” he said.

Moreover, Roba discussed the dire situation that the Karrayyu community is in. He stated that movement has been restricted since the killing of the Abba Gadaas on December 1, discontinuing market activities and preventing the pastoralist community from traveling in search of water and cattle feed. “The people have been subject to harassment and indiscriminate mass imprisonment. Whoever is spotted in urban areas to seek health care or buy goods is beaten and taken to jail.” While putting the number as high as 200 people including women and the elderly, Roba described the conditions of their detention, “It is impossible to visit or bring food to the detainees. A lot of people don’t know whether their loved ones are dead or alive.”

Ethiopian authorities arrested Oromia News Network journalist Dessu Dulla and his colleague Bikila Amenu in Addis Ababa, the capital, on November 18. As of late 2021, they were both detained in a police station in the town of Sebata.

Dessu is the editor-in-chief of the Oromia News Network, a YouTube- and Facebook-based broadcaster, according to previous reporting by CPJ and two people familiar with his work who spoke to CPJ via messaging app on the condition of anonymity, citing fear of reprisal.

Dessu also hosts “Under the Shadow of Democracy,” a weekly ONN program focused on the threats and opportunities of democracy in Ethiopia and Oromia regional state, and he appears as a guest on the broadcaster’s other programs, according to CPJ’s review of the outlet.

On November 18, Bikila and Dessu failed to arrive for work as expected, and were initially thought to be on an unannounced assignment, according to one of those people who spoke to CPJ, who also works at ONN.

The Oromia Media Network, another privately owned broadcaster that covers Oromia, later reported that Bikila had been arrested. The colleague who spoke to CPJ said that ONN learned the two journalists were detained at a police station in Sebata, a town in the outskirts of Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa that is under the jurisdiction of the Oromia regional government.

Though some of the journalists’ friends were able to visit the Sebata police station in late November, Bikila and Dessu were not allowed to speak with them, according to the two people who spoke to CPJ.

Those people said that they did not believe the two journalists had been brought before any court as of late November. The cause of their arrest was unclear, but the colleague said they thought Bikila and Dessu were targeted for their work, given authorities’ history of arresting ONN journalists. That person also said the two journalists could have been swept up in a mass arrest as a result of the recently declared state of emergency.

Amid an escalating civil war in northern Ethiopia, the federal government declared a nationwide state of emergency on November 2, according to media reports and the state of emergency proclamation. The declaration empowered security officers to detain individuals suspected of links to “terrorist organizations” without producing them in court.

At least 1,000 people were arrested following the declaration of the state of emergency, according to a November 16 statement by Liz Throssell, a spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights. Under previous states of emergency in Ethiopia, journalists were repeatedly arrested and faced restrictions on their work, as CPJ has documented.

Bikila was previously arrested alongside former colleagues from Sagalee Bilisummaa Oromo (SBO), the media wing of the Oromo Liberation Front opposition party, and was freed after several weeks without charge, as CPJ documented at the time. Police in Oromia previously arrested Dessu alongside his colleagues in March 2020 and ignored court orders to release them.

Several ONN journalists, including Dessu, were arrested again in September 2020, while they were recording a program at an Addis Ababa hotel, and were detained for two weeks without charge, according to media reports

Oromia regional state Police Commissioner Arasa Merdasa told CPJ in a phone interview in November that he was not aware of Bikila and Dessu ’s detentions and promised to investigate.

Getachew Balcha, the Oromia regional state communication bureau head, did not respond to CPJ’s phone calls in late November 2021.

“Only Honest, Genuine, and All-inclusive National Dialogue Can Solve the Country’s Political Crisis” OFC

OFC

Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) has been repeatedly called for and appealed to the current ruling party and its leaders to change course from the present perilous road to destruction and the political dead-end thereof, which has pushed the country to brink of a potential disintegration. For the ruling party and its leaders are not bold enough to take concrete positive measures dangers are looming on the land of Ethiopia. To tackle the imminent danger, we hereby again strongly reiterate that peaceful resolution is a panacea for the current Ethiopian crises.

Starting from the assumption of power by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed in 2018 after 27 years of a one-party authoritarian rule, Ethiopians in general and the Oromo people in particular, have become hopeful for a successful democratic transition through honest and genuine national dialogue that can lead the country to durable peace, democratic governance and meaningful economic development, which in turn could pull millions of our citizens out of poverty. However, the incumbent government quickly moved to fulfill its ambition of a one-party rule that squandered the opportunity for a real democratic transformation, dashing the hopes of millions of people who were dreaming for freedom and democracy.

Our party, OFC used every opportunity to cooperate with the ruling party to draw a common road map for smooth transition. Our effort to help the ruling party move in the right track has become to the risking of the safety of our members who have been imprisoned in mass, forced to flee from their loved ones, beaten, and even shot dead just for disagreeing with the path the government has chosen.

Sadly, the government’s response to all our peaceful plea was the closure of almost all our party offices across the country, except just three, in addition to forcing the OFC out of the 2021 ill-designed elections hosted by illegitimate election processes that resulted in the usual, “I won 99% or 100% of the vote” tradition we experienced from Ethiopia’s past dictators or elsewhere in Africa. Consequently, today, Ethiopia is at a critical crossroad of uncertainty, which forced us to forward the below points as an alternative for solution. For sure an avoidable war is raging all over the country consuming the lives of tens of thousands and bringing misery for tens of millions. And, more than ever before in our country’s history, the war is not limited to armed factions, but also ordinary citizens with no real training for war or have no knowledge of international rules of engagements in war have become active actors of the horror.

After assessing the on-going blood bath in the country and the potential for a war of all against all whose end-result cannot be predicted, our party is calling for the following steps to immediately be taken to salvage our people from civil war, our country from disintegration and the entire region from potential destabilization.

  1. We call for the immediate establishment of an interim government chaired by an individual accepted by major stakeholders that will serve for a period of 3-6 months with a mandate to maintain law and order, undertake the charting of a common roadmap and facilitate the national dialogue processes.
  2. We urge all warring parties to negotiate for a ceasefire immediately. An end to hostilities including providing unfettered humanitarian access to feed the starving, tend to the sick, permit the displaced to return to their homes, and restore essential services to all areas. This will include a total repudiation of all incitements to violence and hate speech in all forms.
  3. All political prisoners held at various prisons and detention centers must be released immediately.
  4. During the mandate of the interim administration, all parties will begin negotiations on the formation of an all-inclusive transitional government that shall last for 18 months. No major stakeholder shall be excluded from these negotiations.
  5. The all-inclusive transitional government shall adopt a transitional charter, including all necessary measures for economic stabilization, and recovery, as well as finalize the national dialogue processes to determine the future of Ethiopia. The interim administration shall end its mandate by organizing ‘free, fair, and credible’ elections.
  6. As the on-going civil war has destroyed the economy of our country and millions are facing starvation, we call upon the international community to support the new transitional arrangement by providing diplomatic, financial, and material supports for the workings of the new transitional government so as to ensure security as well as the wellbeing of our citizens.

In conclusion, OFC urge all Ethiopians, the international community, and the warring parties to hear our voice and cooperate in achieving durable peace and stability to salvage our country. In this regard, the Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC) strongly reiterates its support for any genuine and honest political solution that helps the redemption of Ethiopia.

Statement from families of Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba and other Oromo political prisoners

Statement from families of Jawar Mohammed, Bekele Gerba and other Oromo political prisoners

*************************************************

We would like to inform the Oromo public, Ethiopians, and the international community about a startling development around the safety of Oromo political prisoners currently held at Kality prison. We know there have been several reports of an imminent threat to their lives over the last few months but we would like to share with you one frightening incident that took place last week.
On the evening of Nov. 18, 2021, around 8:40 PM, a vehicle carrying several armed men with federal police uniform and three men dressed in civilian clothing entered the prison facility without the prior knowledge and authorisation of the prison administration.
The men asked the guards to take them to the cell where Jawar Mohammed and his colleagues were held. The guards refused to allow them access to the facility, and an altercation broke out. The commander on duty that night arrived and asked the men to leave the compound, which they did.
Over the last few days, we have been enquiring to establish the identity of these men and the motivation for their visit. We now have credible evidence that these men were security agents from NISS, led and directed by Mr. Kifle Ismalealem, the head of the counter-terrorism unit within NISS. Mr. Kifle used to work in the intelligence and nationality security team during EPRDF years, before he was suspected of working for the then Ginbot 7 party and removed from his post. He was reinstated after Abiy came to power.
We now know that Mr. Kifle was directed by Mr. Ingidaw Abebaw, the Acting Directory of Internal Security within NISS, and has been to Kality prison several times. Both Mr. Ingidaw and Mr. Kifle report to Mr. Temesgen Tiruneh, the Prime Minister’s Director of National Security.
We are extremely worried that either the government or elements within national security are trying to either assassinate or move the prisoners to unknown locations. The government has already changed the prison guards and there were efforts to remove the commander too.
It is absolutely critical that the Ethiopian government, countries in the region, and the international community look into this issue as a matter of urgency and ensure the safety of the political prisoners. Jawar, Bekele, and many others were jailed for political reasons and should be released immediately.

The Mobilization of Peoples of Ethiopia into Senseless War

OLF

It is distressing to see the Ethiopian peoples in general and the Oromo people, in particular, are unwillingly trapped into endless war and conflicts for more than a century. Since the formation of the Ethiopian empire, the country remained the home of internal conflicts. In these vicious circles of conflicts, the majority of Ethiopian peoples were victims of war for more than a century-long. Particularly the Oromia people, which is a peace-loving society, having a deep-rooted tradition of solving any sort of conflicts peacefully, had been the most victimized society under the endless war of the Ethiopian ruling system. The selfish nature of consecutive dictators of the Ethiopian ruling regimes, who mostly come to power by the armed military force, had plunged the Oromia citizens and other Ethiopians into war and conflicts from generation to generation. This Authoritarian type of political system packed with elements of dictatorial regimes had put the Ethiopian peoples into continuous war and conflict and left the country without a shred of civilization and economic development.

The Oromo people had been persistently resisting this conflict-driven ruling system for more than a century. Particularly since the OLF started consolidating the Oromo national struggle for self-determination 50 years ago, huge sacrifices had been made to change the dictatorial and conflict-driven system into democratic governance. In this journey, the Oromia citizens, particularly the Oromo youth, have paid heavy sacrifices to change the empire system into peaceful and democratic governance.

However, the consecutive Ethiopian regimes, particularly the current Prosperity Party have chosen the war line and continued reproducing conflicts after conflicts and trapping the Ethiopian peoples in endless war. OLF denounces this repeated extension of war. In this regard, the OLF seriously denounces the recent call of the Oromia Regional Government (aka Oromia Prosperity Party) to intensify the war against opposition groups. This last-minute call of ‘every able body to fight’ has no contribution to the peace and security of the country but is designed to keep the Prosperity Party officials in power at the expense of human lives. The OLF believes that sending innocent youngsters to the senseless war is committing crimes against this generation. We strongly denounce this generational crime and believe the mobilization of civilians for this dangerous war has no positive outcome but will be an additional loss of people’s lives and destruction of the country’s resources.

We would strongly advise the citizens of Oromia to reject the recent call- to- fight issued by Oromia Regional Government and instead ask the Oromia citizens to focus on building their regional governance and defending their regional territory. In this regard, we call the Oromia citizen to strengthen their regional governance and solidify the structure of the Oromia National Regional State Transitional Government and protect themselves. Every citizen of Oromia must clearly understand that the widespread conflicts orchestrated by the PP ruling group may engulf into Oromia regional state whereby the defenders must be only the Oromia citizens and its armed forces, nobody else. We also call upon the Oromia citizens to maintain and strengthen peaceful co-existence with their neighboring regions and peoples.

The OLF wants to use this opportunity to remind the TPLF and its force TDF to respect the sovereignty of the Oromo People and refrain itself not to entering into Oromia territory militarily. We hope the reason for our reminder will be understood.

We would like to advise the Ethiopian peoples to denounce any call that intensifies conflicts among peoples and instead focus your attention on a peaceful way of reestablishing Federal Republic Governance involving multi-nation societies and working together for peace and stability and organizing free and fair elections that reflect the long aspirations of Ethiopian peoples.

We urge the international communities to step up for seeking genuine and all involving peaceful solutions to multifaceted crises in Ethiopia and pressure all the stakeholders for peace and security and establish a transitional system that paves the way for all-inclusive political dialogue.

Ethiopia needs a comprehensive peace process in order to find a way out of the current quagmire.

Ethiopia needs a comprehensive peace process in order to find a way out of the current quagmire.

There are multiple political, governmental and non-governmental armed and non-armed forces in the country.
Some key examples of armed Forces:
1. Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) is federal armed force;
2. Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) is a non-governmental regional armed force;
3. Tigray Defense Force (TDF) is regional governmental armed force;
Any foreign governments and non-government entities interested in assisting Ethiopia reconcile with itself and ultimately achieve a sustainable peace for the people SHOULD NOT ignore any of these forces.
In fact, any national dialogue should prioritize all of these forces along non-armed political parties.
Recently, Facebook App or Meta decided to ban Oromo armed group from this virtual space. I strongly believe that is a wrong policy direction for Facebook and ultimately achieves nothing for Oromo and Ethiopia in general.
I’m strong believer and apostle of non-violent political resistance. There shouldn’t be any exception to that principle. However, Oromo armed group is a pro-democratic liberation force that is struggling to bring a sustainable peace for the Oromo people, just the same way Tigray Defense Force (TDF) is going.
For the sake of comprehensive peace, we can’t afford to eliminate them from this virtual space. The country benefits from hearing from them and what they stand for.
It is completely unfair for Facebook to ban Oromo Libration force from this space while other forces are allowed to keep using this platform, rightfully.
Part of the problem with Facebook’s decision goes back to cultural and knowledge gap that exists in the process of social media policy crafting for foreign users.
Even though Oromo content moderators were recently hired by Facebook to fill this gap, they aren’t doing a good job for reasons not clear to most of us.
Fist of all, they come with their own political baggage and biases against the Oromo people. Therefore, it is easy for them to unduly flag anything related to Oromo Liberation force.
Second, they come with little knowledge about the history of Oromo liberation struggle. They don’t seem to understand the complex political issue of the state of Ethiopia and how it interacts with the Oromo. There has always been a difficult political interaction between Ethiopian state and the Oromo people.
This task requires a meticulous understanding and sharp knowledge of the country’s politics. Knowledge of social media content moderation doesn’t cut it.
This is a plea to Facebook/Meta to reconsider its recent decision on Oromo Liberation Force.
For the sake of broader opportunity to try to bring peace in the country, Facebook should look deeper into the matter of Oromo liberation force.

The Government of Dr Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party are Responsible for continued Cold Blood Murders of Oromo Civilians in East Wallaga – Oromia.

The Government of Dr Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party are Responsible for continued Cold Blood Murders of Oromo Civilians in East Wallaga – Oromia.

OLF , 2021

The OLF was strongly denouncing the repeated massacres of Oromo civilians by the central government budgeted Amhara Special Forces (aka Amhara Militias). Although using ethnic conflict as a political tool is a common policy of Ethiopian ruling system, the extent and frequency of the current conflicts are extremely high. It is to be remembered that the Amhara Militias had been deployed to Oromia and Benishangul_Gumuz Regions several times on their own as well as in coordination with Federal Forces and the Eritrean armed forces. To mention some of the recent ones: in the months of March and April 2021, large number Amhara Militias armed with heavy weapons opened fire on Oromo residents in East Wallagga in places known as Wast, Siredoro, Hagamsa, and Haroo/ Lalisee towns and they killed many Oromo civilians. At the same time, many Battalions of Eritreans were deployed to Metekel Zone, Benishangul Gumuz and East/West Oromia regions including Qellam Wallaga and West Wallaga Zones, Shashamane, Guji and Borana Zones and committed many killings.
Particularly the civilian killings increased sharply since Dr Abiy Ahmed vowed in public that he would deploy Amhara Militias to restore law and order in other regions of Ethiopia and his deputy PM, Demeke Mekonnen, highlighted providing firearms and training to the Amhara people to “defend themselves,” implicitly to realize their territorial expansion project to other regions. To the contrary, it is observable truth that the Oromo people had no right to have firearms and had been confiscated all sort of implements including machetes they use for farming and even banned from holding sticks that is a traditional way of life for Oromo men. This clearly indicated that this is intended not only undermining other regional polices but giving vital role to the Amhara militias that is being used to destabilize other peoples.
Although Amhara Militias massacring civilians repeatedly happened in Oromia, the OLF is immensely shocked by this round of brutal massacres of Oromo Civilians in East Wallagga in the last three days. According to the information we received, in the last two days (October 10 and 12, 2021), 40 Oromo civilians were murdered in cold blood in East Wallagga alone. On 10 October 2021, 25 Oromo civilians were brutally murdered by heavily armed Amhara Militias in Haro District of East Wallagga. The civilians were killed in extreme cruelty including massacre of nine people in one place. Out of the twenty-five victims twenty had their throats slit opened, and five were gun shot. Fourteen of the bodies have now been eaten by stray dogs as the gunmen refused to allow burial. We have received the details of eighteen people out of twenty-five killed in Haro District. According to the information the age range of the victims were 12 to 70 years old. Eight are Female and ten are male. Similarly, on 12 October 2021, 15 Oromo civilians were massacred by Amhara Militias in districts of Kiramu and Guto Gidda in a town called Luugoo, East Wallagga. These include the former Luugoo town administrator aged 55 years old; 60 years old man a father of five children; 70 years old woman and 17 years old young person.
In addition, in separate incident, the recently discovered bodies in Borana Zone are shocking news. According to the report issued by Prisoners’ Rights Campaigners on 13 October 2021, two Oromo young civilians known as Boruu Guyyoo and Derejjee Biraanu had been taken out of the Hiddi Lolaa Prison, in Miyo district of Borana and killed in cold blood by the PP soldiers and buried in unknown place. After long time searches by the victims’ families, the bodies of the two Oromo civilians were recovered on 13 October 2021.
OLF would like to express its condolences to their families that might have been affected by this brutal Massacre of Amhara Militias and PP soldiers. In addition, we want to make clear that the identities of the victims that were not known so far would be verified at the right time. The OLF strongly condemn these expanding brutal acts of terror by the PP government soldiers and its appendage Amhara Militias that is creating havoc throughout the country.
We would like to express our deep concern that Dr. Abiy Government’s actions of intensifying ethnic conflicts for political objective will lead to catastrophic ethnic genocide and put the country and the region in irreversible danger.
Therefore:
1. We call for independent investigation into these Massacres of East Wallaga regions so that it will be clear to the Ethiopian peoples as well as to the international community.
2. We inform the Ethiopian peoples and the international community that Dr. Abiy’s government and his prosperity party should be accountable for all the lives lost due to inflaming ethnic conflicts and should refrain from future atrocities that might happen due to actions of his ill motivated partial Government of Prosperity Party.
3. We would like to strongly remind the Oromia citizens that you do not have a government to protect you. OLF was informing you this for long time. Lack of Oromia regional governance exposed it to invasion by other regional forces, namely, Amhara regional government militia. The Amhara regional state as a core of ruling property party is supported by Central Government of Dr. Abiy that repeatedly deployed Militias to break the Oromo people’ lives. Thus, we would like to remind the Oromo people again that you must strengthen the Oromia Regional State National Transitional Government and protect yourself from regional invasion and restore peace and security in your region.
4. We continue to urge the international community to take practical actions using all tools available to pressure the Government of Dr. Abiy to respect human rights, and refrain from inciting genocide between nations and nationalities that would have catastrophic outcome for Ethiopian peoples and detrimental impact on peace and security in the region.

The Prosperity Party has no Right to Misuse and Abuse the OLF name and defame the Oromo people

OLF Statement

The OLF has repeatedly informed the Oromo and peoples of Ethiopia and the international community that the Ethiopian national election held on June 21, 2021, was totally unacceptable by any standard as the process and outcome. It was sub-standard and immoral. The election doesn’t correspond to free and fair election standard. From the beginning to end the process and outcome of the election was full of irregularities and in total delusion.
Literary there was no Election that took place in FDRE Ethiopia as the ruling group claim but it was drama planned and executed by the ruling group to manipulate and misuse the democratic process for their own objectives. The election was an event in which the Prosperity Party (PP) has turned itself into the ‘government’ to trickster the Ethiopian peoples, particularly the Oromo people. In the first instance, the establishment of the PP itself was illegal as there was no constitutional mandate for Dr Abiy Ahmed to dismantle the EPRDF without following legal procedures and replace it by Unitary Prosperity Party. This illegal party has no mandate to rule the country or to organize the national election. In addition, there were series of constitutional crises since Dr Abiy came to power and clear manipulation of resources and power to institute the party (the Prosperity Party) as the Government using sham election. The democratic institutions, such as electoral board, were handicapped and arms twisted systematically to fit to the PP’s Objectives. There was no participation of opposition parties in the election as they were intentionally marginalized from the beginning and ultimately pushed away. In this regard the Ethiopian peoples and the world community know that OLF had been forcefully pushed out of the election. Similarly, the OFC had been pushed out in a similar manner. Even other nominal opposition parties who have loyalty to the PP, but had little divergent ideas, had been either systematically pushed away or harassed during the election.
The election was also conducted intentionally under intense and chaotic security situations and in conflict environment. During the election there were widespread large-scale war between the ruling group and insurgents in many parts of the country including Western Oromia, Southern Oromia, Northern Oromia, Central Oromia, Afar and Ogaden regions and the conventional war in the Tigray region in the Northern Ethiopia. The election was carried out while many parts of Oromia are under military command post and while intense fighting between insurgents and the government forces were taking place in many parts of the country. The people in conflict zones were unable to go to election poles; the polling stations were fully controlled by loyal PP soldiers; there were no independent observers as many international community observers boycotted. Surprisingly, in many places the supporters of the PP were assigned as observers. Those who managed to attend the polling stations gave their vote under fear and intense pressure as they had been threatened by the soldiers of the ruling party and enforced directly or indirectly to vote for members of the PP. In general, the election was carried out under war and conflict, coercive environment, and strict control of the ruling group. In general, the Prosperity Party conducted the June 21, 2021 election without any competition and declared it-self a landside winner.
Currently, Dr Abiy’s unitary party renewed itself and Dr Abiy is forming a government to realize their objective. In this process we denounce, in a strict possible terms, the misuse and abuse of the OLF name and the Oromo people in the process of the so-called government formation of bogus coalition. The Government of Dr. Abiy is trying to deceive the Oromo people and the international community by illegally using the OLF name for legitimacy. This is particularly abuse of the intelligence of all and demeaning to the Oromo youth who sacrificed thousands of their precious lives to overthrow the TPLF-EPRDF led ruling party and gave Dr Abiy an opportunity to come to power.
Hence, we want to remind all peoples of Ethiopia to seek solutions for these repeated and perennial crises facing our peoples and the country. And therefore, we strongly call peoples of Ethiopia and political parties to focus on the following resolution and work toward its implementation without any further delay:
1. We reiterate that the Oromia citizens strengthen the Oromia Regional State National Transitional Government to restore peace and security in their region and to provide meaningful hope to citizens.
2. We would like to urge the Ethiopian peoples to pave the way for the Establishment of Government of National Salvation of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia as per the Ethiopian constitution by involving multi-nation societies and work together for peace and stability and organize free and fair election that reflect the long aspirations of Ethiopian peoples.
3. We urge the international communities to unite in seeking lasting solution to multifaceted crisis in Ethiopia and pressure all the stakeholders for peace and security and to establish a transitional system that paves the way for political dialogue.
