OLF Statement on the Disappearance of Its Leaders and Officers

After our continuous and relentless appeal on the long year’s illegal detention of our members and leaders, the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) initiated an investigation in 2022 GC. The Board instituted a committee which consisted of five members from the staff of the NEBE, a representative of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), and Prosperity Party (PP). The committee visited the Federal, Finfinnee City Administration and Oromiya Regional State’s prison and prison cells . The investigation committee confirmed, among other things, that, first, 'there are many detainees even beyond those listed by the parties. Second, 'those acquitted are still kept in detention'. Third, 'many of the detention houses lack a minimal level of appropriate toilet and ventilation'.
Despite the effort by the NEBE, little has changed. Party members continued to be illegally detained, harassed, and abused. OLF offices all over the country remained closed. Those leaders who were acquitted were illegally kept in substandard detention houses.
Again, based on our repeated appeal, the NEBE set out for a further investigation into the illegal detention of OLF leaders and officers. On April 18, 2023, the Board wrote a letter to the Oromiya Police Commission stating that it further wants to investigate the appeal of the OLF and informed the Commission that a committee consisting of the PP, OLF and OFC representatives and NEBE staff would be at the Burayyu police detention centre, on April 20, 2023, one day before the planned visit by the committee, on April 18, 2023 night, the detainees were transferred to an unknown place. This was for the second time that the Burayu Police dislocates prisoners to obstruct transparent investigation.
On April 20, 2023, on the day set by NEBE and consented by Burayu Police, the committee arrived at the detention centre in Burraayyu District of Sheger Town. The local police commander who gave the appointment was not in the office. Inspector Negash Gari, Head of Criminal Investigation at the Police office, gave attendance to the committee. After hearing the purpose of the visit, he said that he was newly transferred to the office and added that he was neither informed about the issue nor knew the whereabouts of the OLF leaders. The committee left disappointed, understanding that this was a ruse to obliterate the investigation. The whole drama was irresponsible and was deliberately setup to obstruct transparent investigation.

The OLF leaders, namely, Mr Abdi Raggasa, Mr Michael Boran, Mr Kennasa Ayana, Dr Gada Olijira, Mr Lammi Benga, Mr Gada Gabbisa and Mr Dawit Abdata, were acquitted by the court but were illegally detained by the Police for the last two years. Now their whereabouts are unknown. We are highly concerned about their life. All of them suffer from different kinds of illnesses. Mr Kennasa Ayana cannot walk due to ailments sustained after he was detained. His doctor recommended for better place and treatment where he could recuperate.
The act of hiding prisoners from their families and close follow-up and blockage of their right to be attended to by legal bodies is a massive transgression of international conventions related to people under detention and other human rights instruments. Such irresponsible and inhumane treatment of detainees who need close medical attention reveals the blatant human rights abuses by the government.
The OLF reminds the Oromo people that the rights abuses of its leaders have continued unabated. It only rests on their shoulder to protect their leaders and fellow citizens from such violations.
The OLF also calls up international communities, inparticular Human Rights organizations, to closely follow such inhumane acts, locate the detainees' whereabouts, and pressure the Ethiopian government to respect the right of the detainees. We strongly urge National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) to press more that the Ethiopian government release the innocent without further delay.
Victory to the Masses!

Abiy Ahmed economic and political policies are attributable to the economic crisis in the country.

The PM Abiy Ahmed economic and political policies are attributable to the economic crisis in the country. For example,

the PM is financing the Chaka project by printing money, which is why Ethiopia’s inflation is nearly 500% higher than that of Kenya and 1500% higher than that in Djibouti.
Here are some examples: แŠ แŠ•แ‹ต แŠฉแŠ•แ‰ณแˆ (100 kg) Teff 10,000 Birr to 12,000 Birr (it used to be 30 Birr 30 some years ago); แŠ แŠ•แ‹ต แŠฉแŠ•แ‰ณแˆ onion 5000 Birr to 6000 Birr; one egg (12 Birr); one good size chicken (1200 Birr); one good size sheep (12,000 Birr to 15,000 Birr); and แŠ แŠ•แ‹ต แŠฉแŠ•แ‰ณแˆ wheat flour 7,300 Birr.
The IMF attributes Ethiopia’s high inflation to “loose fiscal policy,” meaning the government is borrowing and spending beyond its means. The consequence is a very high food inflation rate of 33.6% which is 17% higher than the general inflation rate. The total expenditure poor households spend on food represents a larger overall portion of their budgets compared to high-income households. This means they are the ones who suffer the most from food inflation. There are economic studies showing inflation increases poverty.
There is no reason to think the PM will stop printing money until the Chaka project is done. This means the current inflation rate will continue at an accelerated rate. The consequence will be hyperinflation and bank runs, followed by economic collapse. The only thing that will force him from destroying the nation is international sanctions.
The fact that the PM is giving priority to a vanity white elephant project rather than reconstructing the war-torn economy and resettling 5 million displaced people shows that he has no regard for the poor. He is driven by his ego to build a legacy project. There is nothing wrong to aspire for a legacy project, but Chaka is coming at the expense of the poor. If Ethiopia has $15.26 billion to spare, it should use it on projects that will help the development of the nation. A palace surrounded by three artificial lakes and shopping centers with luxury products will have zero value to the poor.
We must also remember the thousands of poor people whose houses are demolished to build his palace and surrounding luxury condominiums and shopping malls. The proposed sanction is to help protect the poor from a PM who has shown no sympathy and empathy for the poor.

Combatting Supremacist Ideologies: A Crucial Priority for Sustainable Peace and Prosperity in country

Combatting Supremacist Ideologies: A Crucial Priority for Sustainable Peace and Prosperity in country

Prejudice, discrimination, and bigotry, which stem from supremacist ideologies, have inflicted immeasurable pain and trauma upon society as a whole.
During the Tigray war, a few right-wing politicians in Ethiopia spoke out against the war crimes perpetrated against civilians in the region and expressed their sympathy for the Tigrayan people. I commend them for their opposition to the war and their genuine indignation at the atrocities committed. However, despite their stance on the war, these politicians have continued to oppose the Ethiopian constitution, including the provision on the equality of nations, nationalities, and peoples (Article 39). They continue to advocate for the abolition of the TPLF and #OLF, as well as the constitutional provisions guaranteeing federalism, and they reject the constitutional recognition of the right of nations to self-determination within the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.
Their animosity towards the TPLF is rooted in the TPLF's stance on self-determination for nations and nationalities within Ethiopia, and at the heart of their opposition is their disdain for Article 39, which provides nations with the right to self-determination.
So, what is the driving force behind their opposition to the principle of equality for nations and nationalities? The answer is straightforward: they believe in the superiority of certain groups based on their own criteria. Ultimately, their motivation is driven by an alliance with supremacist ideology.
To create a better world, we must confront supremacist ideologies head-on and commit ourselves to building inclusive institutions that provide equal opportunities for all members of society. This requires us to dismantle extractive political and economic institutions that perpetuate supremacist ideology and promote institutions that foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and social mobility. Only then can we ensure sustainable development and a prosperous future for all.

"Our credible sources indicate that the top military leaders agreed to launch a new military assault with a "scorched earth policy" as a major military tactic to "wipe out" OLA from Oromia. "

OLF Statement on Ethiopian and Eritrean New Military Pact
OLA

The relationship between Ethiopia and Eritrea has passed through ups and downs. It has harbored one of the deadliest wars in which millions have lost their lives, economies devastated, and social fabrics damaged. Thirty-Year War of Eritrean liberation, the 1998-2000 so-called “border conflict”, and the 2020-2022 Tigray War are the best examples. The suffering and human rights abuses that the world recorded in Tigray yesterday resulted from ill-framed relations. The culture that makes war the only option to resolve incompatibilities should change for good.
OLF commends the peaceful resolution of the Tigray War and always encourages all parties to engage in constructive dialogue for enduring peace. OLF also strongly underscores that the end of one war should not lead to the beginning of another.
On 3 April 2023, delegates of Eritrean army generals and senior officials led by General Abraha Kasa, head of Eritrean National Security Agency visited Ethiopia. Eritrean Official Yemane G.Meskel reported that "the central purpose of the current visit is to further consolidate the ties of military cooperation between the two countries". While it is legitimate for countries to consolidate cooperation on any common concern, it is also clear that the military cooperation between Ethiopia and Eritrean has divulged the Ethiopian peoples and exacerbated misery in Tigray and Oromia. In Oromia, we have earlier warned that the Eritrean involvement, in alliance with the Ethiopian Army, in the war against the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) could only increase human suffering and would not produce any positive results at all. That is what happened in Oromia in the last four years.
It is a pity that the two countries’ military cooperation again overshadowed other burning issues. People of both countries are currently suffering from deprivation, hunger, displacement, lack of good governance, corruption and all forms of human insecurities. Sensible governments give priorities to these burning issues than forming a new military pact for further devastation.
Our credible sources indicate that the top military leaders agreed to launch a new military assault with a "scorched earth policy" as a major military tactic to "wipe out" OLA from Oromia. Top military leaders such as Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, Major General Abebawu Tadese and Colonel Tesfaye Ayaleu from the Ethiopian side and Major General Romadan Awliya, Brigadier General Hadish Ephrem and General Fissehie from the Eritrean side were given this responsibility. The OLF strongly condemns continued Eritrean involvement against the struggle of the Oromo People for freedom, democracy and justice.
It is also bewildering to note that the words and actions of the government of Ethiopia is self-contradictory. The statements from the Prime Minster Dr Abiy Ahmed and the Oromia Regional President Mr Shemelis Abdisa, on the federal parliament and regional council meetings, gives the impression that the government is taking action to resolve the war in Oromia peacefully. But the current military pact with Eritrea is a preparation for all-out military attack in Oromia.
Once again, the OLF would like to remind the Oromo people and the rest of the Ethiopian peoples that any unwarranted and hasty engagement with an external force against people they claim as their citizen, like the one that happened in Tigray, must be opposed and condemned. We also like to bring to the international community’s attention that another military buildup and coalition between Ethiopia and Eritrea against innocent and defenseless people will create another round of human suffering. The international community should use any leverage possible to abate it. Peace and security are the only mechanisms that guarantee the international community’s development assistance.
Victory to the masses!

Abiy Ahmed forces muss stop killing Karayyu abaa geda leaders

Another Karayyu Gadaa leader died after heavily beaten by the regime security forces

As violence in Fentalle persists, another #Karayyu Gadaa leader died after heavily beaten by the regimes security forces.

Residents say Gobu Hawile a successor of the Karrayyu Gadaa leader who died during the 2021 massacre of the Karrayyu Gadaa leaders, died of injuries on Monday incurred when he was heavily beaten by government security forces over the last weakened.
The government forces had heavily beaten Gobu Hawile and other people who were with him in #Tututi village in Fentalle district of East Shewa zone #Oromia at a specific place known as Kaarra, a place where members of Karrayyu Gadaa leaders were massacred in 2021.
He added the son of Hawas Mato Borra, a senior Karrayyu Gadaa leader who was gunned down two weeks ago by militants from the neighboring region is among the victims of the beatings and he is currently lingering between life and death in a nearby hospital.
According to the VOA, another local elder Boruu Jille who survived the beatings is also in critical conditions and receiving treatments in Wolanchiti hospital.

A Karrayyu native and an indigenous people’s rights advocate based in the US expressed his concern that coupled with the ongoing drought, and lack of incoming aid, the persisted insecurity in the area, may result in disastrous consequences for the Karrayyu community and threaten their existence.
